Robert Anton Wilson enjoyed his first death so much; he decided to try it again. As Wilson himself wrote in his 1995 book, Cosmic Trigger III: My Life After Death:

According to reliable sources, I died on February 22, 1994 — George Washington’s birthday. I felt nothing special or shocking at the time, and believed that I still sat at my word processor working on a novel called Bride of Illuminatus. At lunch-time, however, when I checked my voice mail, I found that Tim Leary and a dozen other friends had already called to ask to speak to me, or — if they still believed in Reliable Sources — to offer support and condolences to my grieving family. I quickly gathered that news of my tragic end had appeared on the Internet in the form of an obituary from the Los Angeles Times: “Noted science-fiction author Robert Anton Wilson was found dead in his home yesterday, apparently the victim of a heart attack. Mr. Wilson, 63, was discovered by his wife, Arlen.

“Mr. Wilson was the author of numerous books… He was noted for his libertarian viewpoints, love of technology and off the wall humor. Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife and two children.”

This time around, it appears that Mr. Wilson has actually left corporeality, appropriately on 1/11 (at 4:50 am – you hardcore number freaks can get to work on the meaning of that one… I do see a five in there!).

For this cosmic cub scout, Bob Wilson was the motherload. Books like The Illuminatus! Trilogy, Cosmic Trigger, and Coincidance killed most of what little dogmatism I had left in me, and opened me up to a world of possibilities as large as space travel and as small as quantum physics. He also had a razor sharp wit that he skillfully aimed at those who abuse power and wealth. And he was a delightful story teller, whose love of language was evidenced not only by his own novels, but by his ability to quote virtually everything James Joyce and Ezra Pound ever wrote… backwards, while explaining what evolutionary level of primate behavior the author was elucidating.

I had the great pleasure to know Robert Anton Wilson and our intersections were sometimes strange – his Mondo 2000 check hadn’t arrived; or I weirded him out by kneeling down before him like he was the pope and kissing his ring (I thought it was funny.) I also have great memories of sitting with him while he expounded expansively on everything from the rights of the Irish to the genius of Orson Welles. Over the past several years, as his polio returned, and as death started to hover nearby, Wilson sent out funny email messages of the “not dead yet” variety to those of us on his mailing list. There was never a trace of self-pity in any of his messages.

As the result of medical expenses and problems with the IRS, Wilson found himself in a financial squeeze towards the end of his life. Word went out and the internet community responded by sending him $68,000 within the first couple of days (and undoubtedly some more after that). This allowed RAW to die with the comfort, grace and dignity that he deserved. Special props go to Douglas Rushkoff and the folks at Boing Boing (and to all the individuals who contributed) for making that happen.

Robert Anton Wilson taught us all that “the universe contains a maybe.” So maybe there is an afterlife, and maybe Bob’s consciousness is hovering around all of us who were touched by his words and his presence all these years. And if that’s the case, I’m sure he’d like to see you do something strange and irreverent — and yet beautiful –- in his honor.

When it comes to coverage by the national media, UFOs (or Unidentified Flying

Objects), generally speaking at least, are not a story topping the agenda of

your more credible news organizations. In fact, when it comes to such stories,

the unwritten rule has always seemed to be that such reporting is best left to

the supermarket tabloids.

This week however, was one where the mainstream media apparently never got that

memo. Unless I've missed something, three stories topped the mainstream news

this week:

Gerald Ford's funeral.

Saddam Hussein's execution.

And the UFO sighted by numerous eyewitnesses at Chicago's O'Hare Airport.

According to the reports, several eyewitnesses (including pilots and other

credible personnel) watched a classic disc-shaped UFO hover over the airport

before it shot straight up into the air at a very high rate of speed and

disappeared into the clouds. If you missed it, you can view an interview with

So here's a confession.

I've actually followed the subject of UFOs most of my life. I first got

interested when, as a pre-teen boy, I saw something strange myself. Without

going into all of the details, I saw what I would call a grey, football-shaped

object up in the sky while peering out the back window of my parents car during

an afternoon drive in the country.

In the years since, I've read most of the literature dealing with UFOs out

there. I even briefly wrote the "Webwatch" column for UFO Magazine, recommending

the best UFO websites to readers during the nineties, the UFO "boom years."

Like the roughly one half (or better) of all Americans who believe there

actually may be something to all this flying saucer stuff, I've come to a few

conclusions. Now before you reach over to cue the X-Files music, please note my

hesitance to state what that "something" may actually be.

I do believe "something" that is not birds or conventional aircraft is flying

around out there and has been for sometime. I also believe that most people

probably don't give it a second thought - at least if you believe the surveys

concluding that more than half of the population shares the view that UFOs are

real.

This is why I find many of the circumstances surrounding the Chicago UFO

sighting reported this week so inexplicable. According to the Chicago Tribune

report, both the airline and the FAA initially denied anybody saw anything. When

further digging by the reporter — armed with a Freedom Of Information Act

request no less — revealed otherwise, the FAA admitted they had been contacted

about the sighting, which they now dismiss as being due to odd weather

conditions at the time.

Perhaps those "conditions" include the perfect "hole in the sky" that some

witnesses described the object left after it tore through the cloud cover at

O'Hare, and off into space that day.

Speaking of that day, the sighting occurred on November 7th. So why did the

national news media wait until this week to report the story en masse?

Incidentally, that kind of lag time is not a first when it comes to the media's

timetable in reporting a mass UFO sighting over a major American city.

As I mentioned above, the nineties were kind of a "boom time" for UFOs. Between

things like the X-Files on TV, and movies like Independence Day and Men In

Black, UFOs and aliens became as much a part of American Pop Culture in the

nineties as Gangsta Rap and Monday Night Wrestling. The most popular national

late night radio show of the time, hosted by Art Bell, was itself devoted almost

entirely to the subject of UFOs. Just between you and me — from lunchboxes to TV

car ads — those little grey guys seemed to be just about everywhere.

On March 13, 1997, a spectacular mass UFO sighting took place in the American

Southwest. Though it has since come to be known as the "Phoenix Lights"

sighting, the strange V-shaped formation of unidentified lights — which

stretched across the entire night sky — was seen by hundreds of witnesses across

the entire state of Arizona. It was also videotaped by dozens of them.

The original "Phoenix Lights" event quickly became the buzz of UFOlogy through

the Internet and shows like Art Bell's. Still, as was the case with the Chicago

sighting reported this week, it would not be covered by the mainstream media

until several weeks later. The "Phoenix Lights" story eventually devolved into a

media circus with city politicians donning alien costumes for the cameras, even

as one (now former) councilwoman named Frances Barwood urged officials to

conduct a serious investigation into the mass sighting.

The question now, as then, is simply this:

If there really isn't anything to all of this crazy UFO stuff, just why is it

that so many folks in powerful positions act so crazy when it comes to the

subject? You'd almost swear they were actually hiding something. At the very

least, it would seem they'd prefer you and I didn't know about it.

Now you can go ahead and cue that X-Files music.

Jan. 4, 2007 - The Federal Aviation Administration says it must have been a

weird weather phenomenon, and United Airlines denies any knowledge of the case.

But though it has been two months since what appeared to be an unidentified

flying object (UFO) was spotted over Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, the

incident is still raising questions about what exactly was seen and whether the

authorities are trying to downplay it.

As many as a dozen United Airlines employees swear the mysterious object they

saw on Nov. 7 was real—hovering for several minutes above the United Airlines

terminal and then shooting up through the clouds so powerfully that it left an

eerie hole in overcast skies. "At first we laughed to each other" when the

report came over the radio, a witness told the National UFO Reporting Center, a

Seattle-based nonprofit that maintains a UFO hotline and is listed as a resource

in the FAA's official Aeronautical Information Manual. But then I saw the "dark

gray, hazy, round object" and seconds later "there was an almost perfect circle

in the cloud layer where the craft had been." His statement is published on the

Web site of the National UFO Reporting Center, which says its policy is to

protect the anonymity of its witnesses.

So was it a UFO? A secret military aircraft? And why did it take two months for

the details to come out? It may sound like the oldest hoax in the book, but the

United workers—including several pilots—who say they saw the object are

reportedly upset their claims have been ignored. The FAA has said it won't be

investigating the incident further, and it wasn't until this week that The

Chicago Tribune broke the story, speaking to several unnamed witnesses after a

tip-off from the head of the National UFO Reporting Center. Peter Davenport

heads that organization, and has a lot to say about the way the incident has

been handled. A self-described UFOologist, Davenport spoke with NEWSWEEK's

Jessica Bennett. Excerpts:

NEWSWEEK: Your Web site has documented more than 3,000 UFO sightings just in the

last year. Is that normal?
Peter Davenport: We get reports that number certainly into the thousands, and

sometimes into the tens of thousands.

How many of these do you believe are real, and how do you determine whether they

are real?
The overwhelming majority of [reports we get] are not UFOs. Many people report

stars and planets and aircraft and humming birds and pelicans and Frisbees and

hubcaps—there are thousands of things people can look at and not be able to

identify. We rely on our experience to try to quickly identify those cases that

are probably not genuine UFOs.

How long have you known about this particular incident in Chicago?
I found out about this on the day of the event. We got multiple communications.

We released the information about the 12th or 13th of November, put it on our

homepage, and, frankly, I was flabbergasted that nobody was paying attention.

Do you think there has been an effort to downplay it?
My strong suspicion is that this case showed up on the 8th of November—the day

after it happened—in the intelligence briefing document that the president

apparently reads every morning. Are we to believe that a UFO can appear over a

major U.S. airport and the American intelligence community is not informed of

it? That proposition is absurd.

If that's the case, why would the federal government keep those findings from

the public?
You've got to go directly to the government or to United Airlines [for the

answer to that question]. I'm shocked by their response to this, except for the

fact that we've seen this kind of response—certainly on behalf of the

government—for the past 59 and a half years.

What happened 59 years ago?
That takes us back to the first formal sighting that caused a ripple in the

press, which was June 24, 1947, here in the state of Washington. That was Mr.

[Kenneth] Arnold, who saw a string of [disc]-shaped objects streaking down the

Cascade Mountains [near Mount Rainier]. That was the event that gave us the term

"flying saucer."

Still, there are a lot of UFO skeptics out there. What do you say to them?
I've been asked that question about half a dozen times before. Skeptics are free

to think whatever they wish. All I do is release the information—hopefully,

accurate information—and people may read it or consume it anyway they wish. But

many of these hard-boiled skeptics simply do not look at the data. They have a

preconceived notion of how the universe works—what is possible, what is not

possible—to the extent that they no longer have to look at data.

What is that data?

The data are the cases that come in, the information that we're receiving on a

steady basis—over the telephone, over the Internet, photographs and so on.

Probably the most reliable source of data that we receive is eyewitness accounts

from responsible witnesses who seem to be independent of one another. That's not

true of all the people who contact us, of course. We get calls of many, many

stripes. But we focus on the cases that are very well documented—as in the case

of the O'Hare sighting.

So you've spoken to the witnesses in this case.
Yes, that's how we got the information.

And you think they're credible?
The witnesses [in this case] are not only responsible but they're qualified by

virtue of the fact that they've worked in the aviation industry for decades—each

one of them. They're familiar with aircraft, they're familiar with weather

phenomena. United Airlines and the FAA have apparently taken the position that

it either didn't happen, or if it did happen it was a weather aberration. Well,

the written communications that I have in my possession clearly belie that

position.

So you obviously believe that UFOs do exist.
My objective is to give the American people the information that they need to

have, in my opinion, in order to make a rational decision with regard to the UFO

phenomenon. In a sense, I guess I'm an advocate for the notion that our planet

is visited on a frequent basis by these things we call UFOs. If my theory and

the theory of many other UFO investigators is correct, then the U.S. government

certainly knows about this [phenomenon], and has known about it for at least six

decades and is not sharing that with the American people. I believe that is

wrong.

How do you define a UFO, and what elements of that definition were visible in

what was seen at O'Hare?
From my standpoint, [UFOs] are those objects that exhibit characteristics that

strongly suggest that they, almost without a doubt, are not of man's

manufacture. That statement I think is supported by the fact that these UFO

sightings appear to go back hundreds or thousands of years. We have reports on

our Web site from the 1930s, from the 1890s, from 1860, and I have two written

reports on file—one from China in the 12th century A.D. and a report from

ancient Egypt from 1770 B.C. So could that be the U.S. Air Force experimenting

with aircraft? Clearly not. In the case of this object at O'Hare, [the object

sighted] seemed to accelerate so fast and disappear so fast that people's eyes

were unable to follow it, and they didn't know which way it had gone. Now, could

that be of man's manufacture? I doubt it.

Why is there so little debate on this subject?
People think that UFOs are strange. But in my opinion, the reaction of the

American press to the UFO phenomenon is stranger still. They're not interested

in what I consider to be the greatest scientific question of man's existence of

all times: are we alone in this galaxy or are we not? From my vantage point, the

clear answer to that is that we're not. And it appears that these objects visit

our planet on a regular basis.

violent attacks on Jews themselves. Worldwide, since the year 2000, major

pose? And what roles do Israel and the Arab-Israeli conflict really play? The

US Anti-Semitism: Could the Unthinkable Occur?

The shores of the United States have been a historical anomaly for the Jewish

people. America is one of only a handful of nations on earth in which Jews have

been accepted as equals, and accorded all of the rights, privileges and freedoms

of her citizens.

America's first president, George Washington, wrote a letter in 1790 to the

Hebrew Congregation of Newport, Rhode Island: "May the Children of the Stock of

Abraham, who dwell in this land, continue to merit and enjoy the good will of

the other Inhabitants, while every one shall sit under his own vine and fig

tree, and there shall be none to make him afraid."

The words inscribed on the Statue of Liberty's pedestal echo the sated hunger of

Jews in America after more than 17 centuries of unending global persecution and

wandering:

"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door."

The poem's author, Emma Lazarus, was Jewish. Fittingly, America's most

visible symbol of freedom is wreathed with words breathed from a Jewish heart.

But despite America's pure foundations, the disease of anti-Semitism has

surfaced from time to time throughout our history.

In 1862, General Ulysses S Grant, commander of the Union forces and later 18th

president of the United States, issued General Order No. 11, which expelled all

Jews from Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi. Upon receiving news of such

order, President Abraham Lincoln immediately wrote to Grant, ordering him to

revoke the order. Grant revoked the order three days later.

And Henry Ford, the American industrial icon and automotive baron of the early

20th century, was a rabid anti-Semite. He authored an infamous four-volume work

entitled The International Jew: The World's Foremost Problem, which portrayed

world Jewry as scheming together to take over the world.

Because it carried the Ford name, the work gained immediate notoriety and

credibility in the eyes of many, spreading like wildfire and sowing the seeds

for future anti-Semitism in the American consciousness. Today, The International

Jew is one of the holy books of the American anti-Semitic population.

And what of today? How successfully has America fended off societal decay, of

which widespread anti-Semitism is but a symptom?

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) conducts an annual survey entitled "Survey of

American Attitudes Towards Jews in America". Its 2005 findings were striking: a

full 14% of the American citizenry, or 35 million people, hold beliefs that are

"unquestioningly anti-Semitic". This is down from its 1992 survey, which

categorized a full 20% of Americans as strongly anti-Semitic. The ADL's 2005

"Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents" recorded a total of 1,821 events in the US - a

spike of 17% from the previous year.

As the annual survey shows, a resilient and hard-core base of Jew-haters reside

in the US, with evidence suggesting a large part of this core is actively

working to spread their poison across this nation.

One trend is of particular concern. Militant Islam is rapidly spreading its

tentacles across America. One of the few Islamic moderates in this country,

Muhammad Hisham Kabbani of the Islamic Supreme Council of America, estimated

that "extremists" have taken over 80% of the mosques in the US. These extremists

are working single-mindedly to turn America into an Islamic state, with the

Koran as its foundation.

The campaign is being coordinated by both foreign and domestic elements. It is

no coincidence that Libyan strongman Moammar Gaddafi pledged to Louis Farrakhan,

head of the Nation of Islam, an American militant Black Islamic group, one

billion dollars in aid and support. Also, the Saudis are bankrolling the

construction and staffing of dozens of mosques throughout the US. These mosques

are exclusively propagating the militant Wahabbi form of Islam, the very

religion which inspired the 9/11 attacks.

The campaign is not limited to mosques. It also includes Islamic community

centers, newspapers, schools, youth groups, political organizations,

professional associations and business activities - all involved in recruiting,

training, supporting and coordinating its members.

Substantial segments within the Black American community are converting to

militant Islam or have fallen under its influence. This is creating a real and

present danger to American Jews. In late August, Los Angeles police discovered a

major terror plot by three Black Islamic Americans affiliated with the Jamat-E-

Masjidul Islam mosque. A list was found in their possession containing the

addresses of several Los Angeles synagogues and the Israeli consulate. Police

speculate the men were part of a network planning to attack these targets during

the upcoming Jewish High Holy Days.

One week later, possibly in response to the arrests, the Nation of Islam called

for a "jihad" against the Los Angeles Police Department.

Gravely, militant Islam has entered into and is directing much of mainstream

Black America. The Millions More March (MMM) on Washington DC, scheduled for

October 14-16 of this year, was created by Farrakhan to further the Black

militant's agenda. Farrakhan appointed Malik Zulu Shabazz, the virulent anti-

Semitic leader of the New Black Panther Party, as co-organizer of the event.

Among many other anti-Semitic diatribes, Shabazz claims it was the Jews who

enslaved Blacks and brought them to America. He also asserts the "Zionists

control America, lock, stock and barrel."

Farrakhan and Shabazz have successfully courted and enlisted several mainstream

Black organizations and political groups in the MMM campaign, including the 43

members of the Congressional Black Caucus, NAACP, National Council of Negro

Women, National Progressive Baptist Convention, National Urban Coalition, Black

Entertainment Television, the African American Leadership Institute, Rainbow

PUSH Coalition and dozens of others.

A second trend of concern is the millions of illegal immigrants flowing into the

US from Mexico and Central and South America. It is estimated approximately one

million immigrants illegally slipped into the US from Mexico in 2004. As the

2005 ADL survey shows, 35% of foreign born Hispanics hold hard-core anti-Semitic

beliefs, as do 19% of US-born Hispanics. Illegal immigration and high birth

rates make Hispanics the fastest growing segment of the American population.

Hispanics, heavily influenced by the historically anti-Semitic Catholic Church,

are quickly becoming a major force in America's political, cultural, judicial

and social landscape. Hispanics already out-number whites in America's eighth

largest city, San Antonio, Texas.

Please note that Hispanics and Blacks themselves are not, as a group, anti-

Semitic, but the numerical quantity of individuals within these two groups has

an increased tendency towards anti-Semitic beliefs.

American white supremacists are also seeing an explosion in growth. Mike

McQueeney, a Ku Klux Klan leader in Wisconsin, said that since the 9/11 attacks,

"Recruitment has definitely been up. That's not just with the Klan. It's with

every white organization."

Throughout history, outbreaks of Jewish persecution would often follow on the

heels of catastrophe. During the European Black Death, Jews were fingered as

causing the pestilence by poisoning the wells. Thousands were massacred.

Ominously, in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, rumors that a

visiting Israeli delegation stayed away from the World Trade Center were

immediately picked up by the Associated Press and other mainstream media outlets

and broadcast nationally. The implication, at best, was the Israelis knew in

advance of the attacks. At worse, that the Israelis, or domestic or

international clandestine Jewish groups, had perpetrated the attacks. The

Internet is full of American anti-Semitic literature "proving" the Jews carried

out the 9/11 attacks.

Many Americans are also buying the Islamic/anti-Semitic subterfuge that Islamic

terror attacks against America are the result of America's support of Israel. By

extension, the Jews are responsible for Islamic terror attacks against the US.

Remove the Jews, the logic goes, and remove the cause of Islamic terrorism.

The great concern for American Jews should be whether history will repeat

itself. Will the Jews, as they have in almost every other nation on earth, be

held as the scapegoats for whatever future disaster befalls this land? And what

will the reaction be if future terror attacks employ WMDs in one or more

American cities?

As 9/11 shows, even the mainstream American media is not immune from singling

out Jews in the immediate aftermath of a major terrorist event.

The trends in America are disturbing. History has an irritating way of repeating

itself. America has been an anomaly, but anomalies are just that: temporary,

isolated events, which eventually conform to pattern.

The question remains: Will America forever defy the historical pattern?

Don't bet on it.

Open Letter to the World (improved narration)

Meir Kahane was shot to death in New York. He was a very controversial figure, even in Israel. I once served on a committee with him, but this is not about him, it is about a plain statement to the non-Jewish world about how it feels to *be* Jewish on your planet. We are damned for being communists by capitalists, by capitalists for being communists, and by everybody for being Jewish nationalists.
BTW, I am not a neocon, I oppose the Iraq War and have from the beginning. But I hesitate to be an activist, because so much of the Iraq antiwar movement - unlike the Viet-Name era movement, links anti Jewish ideas (disguised as anti-Israeli as if Jewish nationalism were not integral to Jewishness) with anti war ideas, and I feel lending support to one will be seen as the other.
Maybe that's why *this* antiwar movement has been so ineffective in the streets. The Jews, bulwarks of progressive movements in America, for the most part stayed home. There is a lesson here.
